Why We Are Here

Piqua Jr High CBI Service Learning Project

Students in the Piqua Jr. High School Career-Based Intervention Program completed a service-learning project Friday, May 29. A vegetable garden was planted on the grounds of the Bethany Center.

"Wilma Earls and the staff at the Bethany Center have always been wonderful supporters of our program allowing some of our students to volunteer with them every year. We wanted to give back something to them and the community members they assist by planting a garden so they would have fresh produce to use this summer in some of the meals they prepare," said Connie Black, CBIP Instructor.

The Bethany staff found a volunteer to till an area east of the building. Others donated topsoil. This is the first year for the garden, and the CBI program planted a basic layout of green beans, peas and carrots. Other community members are donating onion sets and tomato plants to complete the garden.

"Hopefully, we’ll see success in our first growing season and can make plans to expand the garden in years to come," added Black.

Instructors for CBIP are Connie Black and Sondra Schneider. The CBI program is a satellite of the Upper Valley JVS.
